We are network building and collaboratively mapping projects worldwide that integrate biodiversity conservation and medical service provision.
Background. The mapping collaboration was founded by people involved in on the ground projects at Wanang Conservation Area in Papua New Guinea (Brighton and Sussex Medical School), Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda (Conservation Through Public Health), and the Gunung Palung National Park in Indonesia (Health In Harmony). We decided an open access evidence map on such interventions in both terrestrial and marine habitats would be useful, especially to those setting up new projects in the expanding Planetary Health movement.
First mapping complete. In 2021 and 2022 the first worldwide mapping exercise was conducted, joined by collaborators from 46 organizations who together contributed information on 43 projects operating 1980-2022 across 22 countries.
Ongoing mapping. The second worldwide mapping exercise will launch in 2026.
To find out more. We expect the output paper to be available open access in 2025. In the meantime, on this page you can watch a short video summary of the findings based on a talk given at Harvard Medical School, download a results poster, and read the original appeal for contributors published in The Lancet Planetary Health.
If you have been or are involved in a project that integrates biodiversity conservation and medical service provision we would love to hear about it.
